Conventions of Standard English: Pronouns, Prepositions, Using Have, Has, and HadStudents continue practicing with the use of pronouns and prepositions in their speaking, listening, reading and writing. Fall Break: No School Monday September 23th thru Friday September 27th Describing Physical and Emotional StatesThis week our class will be studying physical attributes and emotional states of people. Using a character of their choice, students are going to develop a piece of writing to describe this person according to physical attributes and emotions. They will write at least 3 sentences about the person of their choice. Students will also be reading The Family Reunion, a short story by Paz Gonzalez. They will apply the vocabulary they have learned from family relationships and will also share activities that families from different cultures share when they get together. Students will take a comprehension quiz on Friday. Describing People and Life EventsThis week, students in our class will be learning and using adjectives to describe people. Students will be using a family tree and writing sentences to explain the relation of the members of their created family. They will be describing each member of their family using adjectives. Students will have a choice to use their own family or create a family for this activity. Students will also be learning about different life events, important documents and their use (birth certificate, passport, drivers license, etc.). Using a flow map, students will be creating a timeline to illustrate important events and writing sentences to explain the events portrayed in their timeline. Wednesday August 28 is Early Release Day. Family InteractionsStudents in our class will be learning vocabulary to identify the members within a family. They are using vocabulary learned from this topic to write sentences and show how members of their family are related to each other. Students will also be working on a small project to create an illustrated family tree that they will be sharing with the class. This project will be due Friday and will be recorded as a grade. We will also be reading The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein, to introduce words to describe the appearance of characters as well as their feelings and actions throughout the story. Students will then compare and contrast the characters and learn to map the plot. Warm ups are completed and discussed in class daily to review or highlight important skills that will prepare them for end of grade assessments. Students are responsible to check for accuracy and turn them in every Friday. Students need to label and date each warm up, before they turn them in for a grade. Learning about the CalendarThis week, IEL students will be learning vocabulary related to the calendar. They will learn the months of the year and the days of the week. They will practice using sentence frames to say the date as well as asking and answering question about the calendar. Vocabulary to practice: today, yesterday, tomorrow Days of the week: Sunday , Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday Months of the Year: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December Students will complete a circle map about the days of the week and a Brace Map for the months and seasons of the year Thursday we will visit the Learning Commons (school library) for an orientation and to check out books. Let the Games Begin!This week our students will be taking the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI). The SRI is a reading comprehension test that assesses students’ reading skills. The score from this test helps teachers place students on the correct educational path, adjust their teaching style to students’ needs, track students’ reading growth over time, and match readers to books appropriate for their skills. Students will be creating an informational poster about their favorite sport where they will apply vocabulary and grammar skills learned in class throughout the year. Also this week, students will be participating in their grade level Field Day. Students will get to experience a variety of fun activities in a friendly and safe environment. Students may choose a place they have visited, get ideas from our International Night celebration, or select a place they might want to visit. They may draw pictures, use photographs, add maps, and write details about what they learn as they research their destination. The final product must be neat, colorful and must include the following components:
Figurative Language/ Transportation ProjectStudents continue practicing figures of speech in preparation for a quiz on this topic.

Figurative Language PracticeStudents will continue to learn about figurative language. They will be identifying similes and metaphors and explaining the difference between them. They will also identify alliteration and hyperbole. Students will finish their Figurative Language Project by Friday. They will have a quiz on figurative language on Friday.
