Developing Healthy Food HabitsMonday- Our class will meet in the Exploration Lab. We are scheduled to take the Mid-year Reading Inventory. The Reading Comprehension Assessment is used to assess and monitor students’ growth in reading comprehension. The assessment includes nearly six thousand test items for students at all levels. Each item consists of a passage, a sentence stem, and four answer choices. Each passage includes texts that students encounter both in and out of school and are drawn from a variety of content areas. Questions assess students’ comprehension skills as applied to the passages. Reading Comprehension Assessment results indicate students’ reading levels on the Lexile Frameworks for Reading Scale. Tuesday through Friday, we will be learning about developing healthy food habits. Students will complete their Food Vocabulary Brochure and practice om a series of activities that include thinking maps, short stories, poems, etc. for students to develop skills necessary for the academic content on this topic. Food and NutritionWe hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving break! During the next several weeks our class will embrace in one of our favorite unit topics: Food and Nutrition. Students will be learning vocabulary related to grocery shopping, creating a grocery list, and engaging in conversations to practice new vocabulary. We will also incorporate some units of measurement that apply to food, such as: pounds, ounces, dozen, etc. Since the topic is so extensive, the lessons will be focused in food categories:
Granny Big Shoes (Folktale)This week our class will read and discuss the short story "Granny Big Shoes," Students will use the events in the story to describe how the plot of the story unfolds in a series of humorous events, as well as how the characters respond or change as the plot moves towards a resolution. They will also determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, using context clues and other vocabulary strategies. Vocabulary:

As we read the text, students will focus on the following skills:
Thursday, we will visit the Learning Commons. Bring any overdue books to turn in and check new ones. Informational Text: How does the human body work?IEL students will be reading and learning Informational Text. Students will be applying science related vocabulary to their reading and writing skills This week we will be focusing on a series of learning activities to learn and apply vocabulary related to the human body systems. Students will work in small groups to complete a series of projects, which includes illustrating, labeling and using sentence structures to explain the basic information about each system. Wednesday, students will be in the computer lab to look up information and complete a graphic organizer about a body system of their choice. They will continue their research Thursday and complete information by Friday. The Skeletal System The Human Heart The LungsThe Human BrainThe brain is part of the nervous system in the human body. It has two hemispheres. The right hemisphere controls the actions of the left side of your body. The left hemisphere controls the actions of the right side of your body. The brain stem controls your breathing, your blinking and your heartbeats. You don't have to tell your body to so this things, your brain automatically does them. Jack and the Beanstalk- Literary AnalysisThis week, due to Conference Week, students will be released at 1:30. Classes are shorter than normal. Our IEL students will continue working with Jack and the Beanstalk. We will focus on the following skills:
Wednesday and Thursday, students will be taking an assessment for the story. Wednesday will focus on vocabulary and Thursday will assess comprehension skills. On Friday, students will watch the animated movie version of the story and compare/contrast with the text version discussed in class. Introducing Elements of Fiction: Jack and the BeanstalkThis week students will be learning elements in fiction and identifying them in a reading selection. As we read and discuss Jack and the Beanstalk, students will learn how elements of fiction interact to develop the plot of this wonderful fictional story. Students will identify the setting, including place and time and will complete a plot map. Students will also and learn to cite evidence from the text to support claims from the story. They will work in small groups to identify character traits and find information to support the description of the characters in the text. Additionally, students will use a double bubble map to compare and contrast the main character with themselves.
