Dr. Seuss' The LoraxWe hope everyone enjoyed a week off. This week, we are engaging in reading one of Dr. Seuss' classics, The Lorax (click here for a copy of the poem). As we read this wonderful poem, students will be working in small groups to find the meaning of new words as they are used in the text. They will be reviewing comprehension skills through the use of thinking maps and guiding questions. Students will be using a bubble map to describe the main characters from the story. They will be using a double bubble map to compare and contrast the setting at the beginning of the story with the setting at the end of the poem. Students will learn to analyze and describe how the settings of the story shape the characters and how their actions influence the setting and other characters. The collection of thinking maps that students develop this and next week will be used as a project to assess their learning. Students can click on the following link to enjoy the e-book for The Lorax. Is it a Cold or the Flu ? This week, English learners will be learning and applying vocabulary for our next unit, Ailments and Symptoms of Illness. Students will read and discuss and article about common symptoms of the flu, common cold and sinus infections. They will describe symptoms, compare and contrast the flu and cold symptoms and roll play a visit to the doctor to practice the vocabulary. Students will choose to create an informational poster, brochure or pamphlet to alert the community about symptoms, treatments and prevention of these illnesses. Yay for Winter Break! School will be closed February 20th through 24th |
