How do we affect our environment?
This week our students will be learning about endangered animals and how we can affect our environment.
They will read articles and conduct a research project about an endangered animal of their choice. Students will use the computer lab and gather information from specific teacher assigned websites to complete their project.

Lessons from The Lorax
This week we continue to work with The Lorax. Students will be identifying poetic devices and sensory images from the story. They will also work on a collaborative project using Office 365 to develop a Power point presentation showcasing their learning experiences from this story.
Students will take a test on Thursday , which includes vocabulary, comprehension and identification of sensory images from The Lorax.
On Friday, students will develop a summary for the story. Students will work in small group to generate a flow map that will assist them as they write the summary.

In celebration of Read Across America this week, our students are reading "The Lorax." Dr. Seuss' creative way of writing inspired this wonderful classic, which many readers enjoy through the years.
As students read the story, they will be practicing vocabulary in context and comprehension skills. They will describe the setting and how it changes as the plot progresses in the story. They will describe the main characters and their traits and learn to explain how the characters influence the development of the story.
Students will identify and provide examples of sensory images from the story. Next Monday, students will go to the computer lab to complete some assignments about The Lorax.
A Ship Lost
Much has been written about the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle and the unexplainable disappearance of many ships and vessels in this intriguing area of the Atlantic Ocean.
This week our students will read and discuss A Ship Lost. This short story relates how the U.S. Navy, Cyclops, vanished without a trace in the Bermuda Triangle during a voyage from the island of Barbados to Norfolk, Virginia. The Cyclops still remains the largest navy ship ever lost without leaving the a clue to her fate.
Students will identify new vocabulary words and find their meaning in context. They will provide an illustration and write a sentence using each word. Students will answer comprehension questions about the story. They will study a map to find the location of the Bermuda Triangle and formulate their own hypothesis regarding this mysterious place in the ocean.
Titanic's Last Meal
This week our students will be working on skill maintenance around the topic of Titanic. We will be reviewing and practicing the use of uppercase/capital letters in sentences. Students will also review and practice the use of verbs in present and past tense.
We will also read and discuss Titanic's Last Meal article to create a writing plan using a flow map that will help students write a short essay about the topic of what passengers from each class ate on their last day on board the ocean liner.
ACCESS for ELLs 2.0
This week ESOL/IEL students will be taking ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 online test. ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 is a secure large-scale English language proficiency assessment administered to Kindergarten through 12th grade students who have been identified as English language learners (ELLs). Last Titanic Survivors
This week we will continue our research about the Titanic. Students will read and discuss how, after so many years under the ocean, Robert Ballard discovered the wreck of the the sunken R.M.S. Titanic.
We will also read the testimonial article of The Last Titanic Survivor. Students will create a timeline of the major events related to the Titanic. They will use the timeline of events to write an organized piece of writing using transition words.
Return to the Titanic
We hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend!
This week, students in our class will be reading Return to the Titanic by Susan Goodman. As they read and research about this important event and its impact in history, students will practice some writing skills as well.
Students will prepare a mini-book with the vocabulary for the story. The will complete a flow map that will help them develop an organized writing piece about the story. Students will identify important information from the article and develop a topic sentence for a piece of writing. Students will need to provide a reason for their writing and write examples to support their claim.
Additionally, students will write a conclusion for their paragraph.

Ships, Boats and Vessels
We will begin our unit of Ships, Boats and Vessels. Students will continue to apply vocabulary that relates to transportation They will be reading informational articles to learn how Vikings built their different types of vessels. Students will practice identifying information from pictures and captions to answer question. They will be able to explain the reason their ships are so important in history.

This will be a short and very exciting week, since we begin the second half of our school year.
We will begin our unit of Transportation. Students will be learning vocabulary that relates to transportation. They will be identifying different ways of transportation and reading informational articles to compare the speed and effectiveness of each vehicle.

Friday January 5th- First Semester Report Cards will be available in Parentvue and Studentvue. Envelopes will be sent home with pertinent information. The envelope needs to be signed to indicate that you have seen your student’s report, and returned to your child’s homeroom teacher.
How does food provide nutrients to our body?
Out last unit for the semester is closely relates to Science and Health. Students in our class are learning vocabulary related to the different food groups. They are working in small groups to research information about food and how different types of food provide nutrients to our body.
Students are identifying food and classifying them into the correct food group. They are learning to identify food items by their description. Students are also learning about the benefits of a healthy diet and how some people have allergies or restrictions with certain types of food.
