Embedded Assessment: Writing an Explanatory Essay
This week, our students will be working on their Embedded Assessment 1 for Unit 2. Students will produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. They will choose their writing topic from a list provided to develop an informative/explanatory essay to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
Students will use guidelines and a rubric, provided by the teacher, as reference to develop their writing assignment.
Additionally, students continue working on their IXL assignment for Subject-verb agreement (a score 80% or above on each skill is needed to show mastery) :
Understanding a Society's Way of Life
During this week our class will focus on analyzing the significance of specific passages and the relationship between character and setting.
After completing the novel and having watched the film version of The Giver, students will identify the mood and symbolism used in the novel and evaluate the director’s choices in conveying mood in the film version of the story.
Students completed a study guide before winter break to study for The Giver test. There will also be a vocabulary assessment on specific terms from the novel.

The Giver- Chapters 21-23
This weeks, students in 8th ELA class will be reading the last chapters of The Giver. We will also be taking the assessment for the novel, which includes vocabulary and comprehension questions. At the end of the week we will be watching the film version of the novel and comparing the similarities and differences between the two.
Mood and Memories- As you watch the film, pay close attention to the scenes where Jonas receives the memories. How does the director convey mood?
